China warns US to avoid trade confrontation

Tuesday, May 22, 2007

Speaking in Washington Tuesday at the conclusion of the China-U.S. trade summit, Chinese Vice Premier Wu Yi warned the U.S. not to pursue a ‘blame game’ in continued trade negotiations. “We should not easily blame the other side for our own domestic problems,” Wu said, speaking through an interpreter. “Confrontation does no good at all to problem-solving.”

The valuation of the Chinese Yuan has been closely tied to the U.S. Dollar for years. Critics charge that this resulted in a relatively low value, making Chinese goods cheaper in the U.S., contributing to the current trade imbalance that favours China.

Although the Chinese government expanded the band in which the Yuan can float (relative to the U.S. Dollar) from 0.3 percent to 0.5 percent last Friday, critics say the measure doesn’t go far enough to address the U.S. trade deficit. Members of the U.S. Congress have blamed China’s policy of currency manipulation for the rising trade imbalance and a 16 percent drop in manufacturing jobs since 2000. In 2006, U.S. imports from China exceeded exports by US$232.5 billion, almost one third of the total trade deficit of US$765.3 billion.

In April, the U.S. Department of Commerce filed a WTO piracy complaint against China. Subsequently, China has agreed to talks and has issued some internal guidelines to address the issue. Wu said that both sides should “firmly oppose trade protectionism.” She said that any effort to “politicize” the economic relationship between the two nations would be “absolutely unacceptable.”

“The Chinese government will agree to U.S. demands” on piracy, predicted Albert Louie, in April, about the upcoming talks. Louie is the managing partner of A. Louie Associates, an anti-piracy company in based in China. “There is no question the government wants to crack down on counterfeiters. What remains in question is the consistency of enforcement,” he added.

The U.S. delegation also highlighted food safety as a concern with imports from China. The example of melamine-tainted pet food ingredients imported from China recently was used as an example of weak health and environmental controls in China. U.S. trade delegate Susan Schwab said the issue of food safety was raised by Agriculture Secretary Mike Johanns and Health and Human Services Secretary Michael Leavitt. “This is not necessarily reflective of more protectionism or anti-Chinese sentiment, but rather that there are concerns there and we need to be responsive,” said Schwab.

It is hoped that breakthroughs will be reached on issues such as U.S. complaints of high Chinese import duties on U.S. energy technology products and the restriction on U.S. airline flights to China.

In the US Congress, a number of potential bills that would impose trade restrictions on China, are being pursued. Recently, a trade panel voted to impose a 44.3 percent tariff on polyester imports. Meanwhile, the Bush administration increased duties on certain types of glossy paper from China. A bill imposing 27 percent tariff on all Chinese goods has been proposed in Congress but hasn’t yet passed.

“The frustration that I and many of my colleagues in the Senate feel is that China is not satisfying its obligations as a member of the WTO and as a major beneficiary of open trade,” wrote Charles Grassley, chairman of the Senate Finance Committee, in a letter sent to Wu in advance of the summit.

How Model Airplanes Fly

After the successful flight of the man-carrying vehicle made by the Wright brothers, interest in aviation spread rapidly and many models were made. Model airplane enthusiasts are already existing in the early 1900s’. Most of the models are rubber powered, twining type with double stick fuselages that are common in Europe. But even in the early days of model flying, small petrol and compressed air engines are already being used. The materials used in model constructions are birch strips, veneer, spruce, piano wire or bamboo and oiled silk covering. Then balsa structure and tissue covering appeared in the United States in the late 1920s’. So much for the history of model aircraft. So you see, even today, the airplane structure and how it fly is no different from the one we are flying today. The wings, fuselage, vertical and horizontal stabilizers, propellers, engines, landing gears are the same. The airplane, to fly and have control during flight uses them. The wings are obviously responsible why the airplane can stay in the air for a long time. With proper design of the airplane, dimensions, weight considerations and aerodynamic design characteristics it will fly successfully. The aerodynamic principles behind it is what really makes it fly. But even though it has a good design, weight and balance plays a major role. There was a saying that a feather flies better than a brick which is true because a very heavy airplane wont fly if it cannot be sustained by its power plant (engine, propeller, and fuel tank). And with regards to balancing, a well-balanced airplane is controllable during flight. Usually the fulcrum or center of gravity is located of the wing chord. Balancing it is by placing your fingers on both sides of the wing, then relocating the receiver, batteries and servos until the airplane is balanced. You may ask why the center of gravity is located of the wing chord? It has something to do with aerodynamic center, neutral point that can be explained in detail with some illustrations by following the link on the bottom. When you look at the cross section of the wing, the shape is called an airfoil. Basically the airfoil consist of upper and lower camber, leading and trailing edge. When the airplane is flying, there are aerodynamic forces that interact with the wings, vertical and horizontal stabilizers because the airplane is going against the air or commonly called relative wind. Then it creates a variance of pressure on the upper versus the lower camber of the airfoil (or the wing itself) which generates lift. The air that passed the lower camber should have a higher pressure against the upper camber to sustain flight. This has something to do with law of continuity. The air molecules that separates from the leading edge, going to the upper and lower camber, should meet at the trailing edge at the same time. Since the upper camber has a greater curve than the lower camber, the distance on the upper camber is longer and therefore requires more velocity to meet the air on the lower camber. This creates a lower pressure on the upper camber based on the Bernoulli’s theorem, “as the velocity of air increases, pressure decreases”Hope my brief explanation is understandable. If you want to know the details with visual aids about the model airplane theory of flight, I suggest going to my site: Model Aeronautics for Dodos to know more about rc model airplanes

Saudi Arabia fears Hajj swine flu outbreak as four pilgrims die

Sunday, November 22, 2009

As the annual Muslim Hajj pilgrimage to Mecca gets underway, Saudi Arabian authorities have expressed concern swine flu could impact pilgrims. Four, with underlying health issues, have already died.

Two men and a woman in their seventies and a seventeen-year-old girl have died, according to the Health Ministry. The men from India and Sudan, the older woman from Morocco, and the teen from Nigeria. None were vaccinated against the virus.

One died in Mecca, the others in Medina. All had conditions including cancer and respiratory ailments. The World Health Organisation puts the current swine flu death toll at 6,750. Four more people are in Saudi hospitals in critical condition and a further twelve are recovering in hospital.

Each year around three million make the pilgrimage. And, Saudi authorities are concerned about the possible spread of the virus. At least one pilgrimage to Mecca is deemed mandatory for every Muslim capable of doing so. Fifteen thousand extra medical staff are deployed, ports and airports screen incomers with thermal cameras, and hundreds of extra hospital beds have been set aside. Visa requirements specify only those vaccinated against the flu strain can apply.

In September, Egypt forbade hundreds of Muslims from leaving Cairo for the Hajj after an Egyptian woman returning from a more minor pilgrimage last July became the first swine flu fatality in both Africa and the Middle East. For Ramadan, pilgrimage to Saudi Arabia was banned by Iran for the same reason.

Teen broadcasts suicide online

Sunday, November 23, 2008

A Pembroke Pines, Florida teenager killed himself Wednesday, November 19, while broadcasting on the live video site Justin.tv. After making suicide threats and being encouraged by Justin.tv viewers and Bodybuilding.com forum members, Abraham K. Biggs, 19, committed suicide by taking an overdose of opiates and benzodiazepine, which had been prescribed for his bipolar disorder.

Biggs first began blogging about his planned suicide 12 hours before the actual event. He died after taking pills and lying on the bed in front of the webcam. After the broadcast, viewers who apparently thought it was a hoax posted messages such as “OMG”, “LOL”, and “hahahah”.

Hours later, after being alerted by viewers who had noticed that Biggs had stopped breathing, law enforcement and paramedics arrived, discovered his body, and covered the camera. The Broward County Medical Examiner’s Office has reportedly confirmed Biggs’ death.

According to Montana Miller of the Bowling Green State University, the circumstances of this case were not shocking: “If it’s not recorded or documented, then it doesn’t even seem worthwhile. For today’s generation it might seem, ‘What’s the point of doing it if everyone isn’t going to see it?'”

Biggs’ sister Rosalind was angry that neither the website nor its viewers reacted soon enough to save him. “They got hits, they got viewers, nothing happened for hours,” she said. She described him as “very happy” and “friendly and outgoing.” “On a normal day, you couldn’t really tell that he got as low as he did.” However, he did have relationship problems with his girlfriend, according to a friend.

Mental health professionals have warned about the possibility that other mentally troubled people would copy his actions. According to Dr. David Shaffer of Columbia University, “Any video showing it as heroic or romantic or glamorous could reduce the anxiety people might feel about suicide. It becomes a respectable behavior and lowers the threshold of suicide.” He and other psychiatrists recommend that potentially suicidal teens talk to others and “tell what’s going on.”

Sources close to both sides say NHL, NHLPA agree on Salary Cap structure

Thursday, June 9, 2005

The Globe and Mail (Toronto, ON), citing sources close to both sides in the dispute, reported Wednesday that the National Hockey League and the NHLPA have agreed to a salary cap structure, arguably the most contentious issue in the continuing lockout that led to the cancellation of the 2004-05 NHL season on 16 February, 2005.

The Globe and Mail is reporting that the deal, providing the “cost certainty” that the NHL has been seeking, will consist of a floating, team-by-team salary cap and floor based on a percentage of each team’s revenue projections. What is being reported as a six-year deal has a salary cap range of $34-36 million and a salary floor of $22-24 million, both hard caps. The new deal will also reportedly include the across-the-board 24% decrease in salary offered by the NHLPA in February. A dollar-for-dollar Luxury tax will also take effect at the halfway point between the lowest salary floor and the highest salary cap (slated to be $29 million for the first year of the deal). Details about what will be done with this money have not been completely worked out, but it is thought that this money will be distributed to teams below the halfway point in such a way as to make sure they remain above the salary hard minimum.

While this is one of the most contentious issues in the labor dispute, there are several other issues that may delay the signing of a new Collective Bargaining Agreement. These include deciding how high-payroll teams will drop to the new maximum, working on new systems for salary arbitration, free agency, Olympic participation, and drug testing, and to design a complete revenue-sharing system.

How To Choose Pet Cremation Jewelry}

Submitted by: Mark Hamilton

It’s sad when a close animal companion leaves this world. I’ve experienced it several times and each time I feel a strong need to have some sort of keepsake to remember my pet by. Some of the items in my memory box include baby kitten and puppy teeth and a 4″ long whisker that my big cat shed the day before a dog caught him flat-footed.

When we really love our pets and can afford to give them a special send-off, we may decide to cremate them. Then comes the question “what do I do with my pet’s ashes?”. That can be a difficult question to answer. I know someone who still has their ashes in a cardboard box 2 years later because she cant decide what to do with them. Of course we could always spread some of the ashes at our pets favorite outdoor spot or theres always the urn. But somehow an urn can feel a little cold and impersonal. Luckily theres pet cremation jewelry!

One of the best and most popular ways to have our pet’s ashes close is to keep them in pet cremation jewelry. There are many types of cremation pendants that will hold a small portion of your pet’s ashes. Most of these involve a small hollow pendant made out of metal, wood or a simple glass tube. You put the ashes of your pet in the hollow vessel and a plug or screw top seals the hole. This is a nice and convenient way to carry your pet’s ashes as a piece of jewelry. Many of these manufactured cremation pendants are pretty basic and a bit uninspiring. However, there are some very beautiful pendants of this type and some of the more expensive ones are even handcrafted. Prices for these types of cremation pendants range from around $40 to over $1,000 with the average price for a quality piece running a bit over $100.

If your tastes run more towards the artistic and handcrafted, a unique and elegant way to keep your pet’s ashes around your neck is a hand blown glass cremation pendant. These cremation pendants arent just simple containers to put your pets cremains in. Instead, the glass artist who creates them actually inserts your pet’s ashes into the molten glass while they are creating your pendant! As the ashes are being inserted into the glass, a chemical reaction takes place that creates many tiny CO2 bubbles. These bubbles combine with the ash to form random intricate patterns . When your pendant is finished, you can see your pets ashes inside and they become an integral part of the art inside the pendant.

These pendants are priced from around $60 to $200 with some artists also offering glass memorial marbles. Although it’s more difficult to find a glass artist who will custom make these pendants, it’s worth looking at some to see what they’re like. Although as a glass artist I’m a bit biased, I can’t think of a more beautiful and unique way to keep your pet’s ashes close to you.

OhmyNews citizen reporters meet in Seoul, Korea

Friday, June 24, 2005

Seoul — More than 300 “citizen reporters” hailing from countries as far apart as Chile and Norway are coming together at the OhmyNews International Citizen Reporters’ Forum from June 23 to June 26, 2005 in Seoul. OhmyNews is one of the most popular South Korean news websites, and it has played an important role in the election of reformist President Roh Moo-hyun. Unlike traditional news sources, OhmyNews allows any individual with an Internet connection to contribute stories. A professional staff of journalists vets incoming submissions and decides which stories are to be published.

The project is sponsoring the forum in order to promote its English edition, officially launched in May 2004. Citizen reporters writing in English exchange ideas and stories, and try to understand the inner workings of the Korean edition. The conference is sponsored by Korean corporations such as Samsung, SK Corporation, LG, Yuhan-Kimberly, and Asiana Airlines.

U.S. Secret Service conducts drone exercise

Thursday, March 12, 2015

The Associated Press (AP) reported on Tuesday the U.S. Secret Service is conducting drone exercises over Washington, D.C. to defend against unmanned aerial vehicles being flown over the area.

The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) approved the Secret Service to conduct these flying exercises. The exercises are to be over parts of D.C. airspace which is normally off-limits below 18,000 feet, also called a no-fly aone or the D.C. flight restricted zone. The exercises are to take place in the very early morning hours over the next several weeks.

According to AP, a U.S. official speaking under condition of anonymity said the agency is testing these drones for law enforcement and to defend against potentially dangerous drones, but declined to comment on the specific details because they’re classified. However, they sought to prevent concerns by possible witnesses by publicizing their intent to conduct tests. The agency is cautious of witnesses of unmanned aerial vehicles flying over D.C. because of a drone sighting incident several weeks ago. Witnesses saw several unidentified drones flying over Paris, France, which caused concerns.

AP said techniques to be tested include signal jamming. Most drones use radio-frequency signals for remote control. Intercepting these signals might allow tracking the drones. Jamming, though, could interrupt Wi-Fi of people in the vicinity.

The FAA last month announced preliminary guidelines requiring UAVs be operated within sight of the operator, prohibiting night flying, and requiring speeds below 100 miles per hour (about 160 kph) and altitudes below 500 feet.

The Process Of Human Resource Planning Ensures The Optimum Use Of Current Available Human Resource

There are many organizations which are now successful because of the proper human resource planning as proper human resource planning paves the path for the future of the organisation. Any organisation can be considered to be standing on the four pliers and these are finance, Marketing, Operations and Human Resource. Role of any human resource department is to give any such organisation a growth in terms of employee’s status and value. Today many human resource executives use modern approaches and theories in order to investigate the over all status of human assets any organisation may have.

Any human resource planning may include one or more of the following points like hiring best fitted human resource with the minimum possible costs, education of current human resource for the increase outputs, development of the HR strategy for the proper organisation functioning. Objective of human resource planning is to provide smooth functioning to organizations in a long run or to optimize current and future human resource for better out puts. Any good HR strategy includes human resource development practices as well.

There are many activities any HR executive can approach in order to make a effective HR strategy which normally starts with the investigation level and various types of staff surveys are done to know the exact and accurate information on the current HR status in any organisation. Staff surveys are often done in the form of questionnaire containing both open ended and close ended questions. Often the identity of respondents kept undisclosed so that employees can express their opinions without any fear of being highlighted in the organisation and the biggest advantage of such staff surveys is that people speak what they feel because of these staff surveys exact and accurate information can be gathered.

Various questions like employees views on current work culture and administrative issues can be asked in these surveys. These surveys are also helpful to investigate on the current employees relations as well and based on the information gathered about the current HR status and employees relations an effective HR strategy can be developed as a part of human resource planning. In many labor intensive industries it is quite important to manage good employees relations as any small dispute can be turn into a big issue there.

Any human resource planning has mainly four basic phase’s investigation, analysis, formulation, implementation and monitoring. In the investigation phase several problems and bottle necks get identified with the help of staff surveys and other Human resource tools. In this phase several bench marks and milestones get set and based on the comparison from the current status a report is often prepared. In the analysis phase many types of group discussion and other activities happen in order to analyse the date and to reach on a possible best solution often opinion from different departments is taken in order to make process real effective. After proper analysis different HR strategies and benchmarks gets formulated in order to make the process of whole department flawless and smooth. Then in implementation and monitoring phases all the formulated rules and standards are bring into force and HR team closely monitors about the effectiveness of such rules and parameters. There can be other few steps also and it depends upon the type of organisation and the type of HR strategy as well.
