U.S. expedites bombs shipment to Israel, outcry in the Muslim world

Sunday, July 23, 2006

While whole blocks of Beirut are leveled to rubble and civilians flee by the thousands, the U.S. administration is, according to the New York Times expediting a delivery of bombs to Israel. An op-ed piece in the Sydney Morning Herald concludes that the sale of more American arms to the Israeli arm will cause anger and might be used to justify Iran supplying missiles to Hezbollah. According to Arab political analysts the decision to rush more bombs to Israel will increase existing anti-American feelings in the Middle East and will help radicals.

The rushing of more bombs to Israel is consistent with US policy, according to a report issued three days ago by the World Policy Institute which indicates that Israel has always been the largest recipient of military aid from the United States. According to Frida Berrigan, co-author of the review entitled U.S. Military Assistance and Arms Transfers to Israel: U.S. Aid, Companies Fuel Israeli Military, U.S. military aid to Israel is about $3 billion a year. This equates to about 20% of the Israeli military budget annually. According to Berrigan, in an interview given to Democracy Now on Friday, just on the 14th of July while calling for restraint the U.S. also sold $120 million worth of jet fuel to the Israeli military assisting their bombing campaign of Lebanon. In fact, Berrigan said, since the Bush administration came into power, about a total of $6.3 billion worth of weapons sold to Israel. Berrigan also added that if in fact the United States wanted to cut military aid at this time they have precedent to do so, citing as an example the Reagan administration’s cut of military aid and freezing of weapons sales to Israel during its last invasion of Lebanon in 1981, during the then conflict’s first 10 weeks.

Israel claims they have been using precision-guided munitions in order to neutralize Hezbollah and to minimize harm to civilians. However, U.N. and Lebanese officials estimate at least 360 Lebanese civilians have been killed and more than 1,000 wounded, with about 700,000 people already displaced since Israel’s bombings began. According to the United Nation’s emergency relief co-coordinator, Jan Egeland, nearly one third of casualties resulting from the Israeli offensive in Lebanon have been children. Egeland, who visited Lebanon today denounced the Israeli strikes and appealed for safe passage for aid, saying civilians were paying a “disproportionate price” in the attacks targeting Hezbollah strongholds. He said civilians are paying a disproportionate price in Lebanon and northern Israel and stated that “A disproportionate response by Israel is a violation of international humanitarian law.”

In many capital cities around the world including the Middle East, as well as Europe, Canada, Latin America and the United States thousands of people took part in demonstrations against the Israeli strikes. In London people marched to the US embassy and shouted slogans such as “George Bush, terrorist” and “Down, down, USA.” In Tel Aviv 1,000 Israeli Jews and Arabs also turned out to denounce their country’s actions, gathering in Rabin Square and brandishing placards reading “war is disaster” and “Jews and Arabs refuse to be enemies.”

Factors To Consider While Searching For Best Movers Services

By Adriana J. Noton

A lot of issues may come up from time to time and may at times force one to shift from his or her current locality. Sometimes it might be the relocation of your premises, business office, or your residence. Whichever the plan you have of relocation, you must be conversant with the most appropriate movers in any area. This practice is available on tariffs, which are the determiners of what price you will pay for the relocation.

A moving company is the firm that is mainly occupied with the activities of professionally moving other people’s property from one place to another. They are equipped with numerous moving equipment such as vans, lorries, buses, and even shipping containers to cater for different moving needs. However, whichever method is applied, one must consider hiring the most suitable and trustworthy movers.

The initial point that you must address is the final destination or the place you want to move. This will be very important in determining what mode of transport you will apply and the expenses incurred. In case you are moving to states abroad, you should consider hiring a firm that has air or water movement capability. For short distances, go for the firm that has vans, and short distance moving machinery.

The company you choose will also affect the whole relocation plan. Always ensure that the firm you select has a reputable image with the outside society. In addition, the firm should have the legal business permits and government licenses. This will guarantee you of successful relocation. In addition, it minimizes the chances of goods lost on transits and eradicates any situations of fraud.

Another factor that you must take into note is the cost of moving. Normally, the overall costs are affected by the type of goods to be moved, the final destination and the mode of transport to be used. However, consider the charges that are easily affordable and reasonable for you. This can be done by selecting several companies and settling on the most affordable.

In addition, you should consider hiring a company, which offers insurance facilities. This will act as a guarantee in case your property is lost on transit. Apart from that insurances also helps a lot in case of loss of information. This is because this process will allow auto recovery of the data lost. Apart from that, this is some form of warranty that the moving company offers highly reliable services.

Experience is another factor that you must consider. Remember that the most experienced company has the most advanced techniques and strategies to carry out the relocation process. Avoid contracting amateurs in this field because they might lead to great loss of property and most of them cannot even prove their credibility.

In general, the selected company should be a firm which can be trusted with somebody’s property. Always be up to date with the currently emerging firms and practices to get the best movers services. Remember that your property is very essential and it has to be guarded in all ways. Therefore, while intending to move from one place to another, ensure that you undertake your plan with the most appropriate movers.

Baby attacked by dog in New York

Saturday, January 5, 2008

An eight-month old boy, Andrew, was attacked and killed by a Doberman Pinscher in Brooklyn, New York. The dog was a three-year old named Mackabee, who is also neutered.

The grandmother was babysitting the boy. While she was in the kitchen she heard the boy scream and ran next door to a neighbor for help. The neighbor took the dog off the boy, rescued him and brought him to his house to try and perform CPR on the boy, while he called 911 for help.

Police said the baby’s head was in bad shape and the dog broke the boy’s skull. Andrew was sent to Kings County Medical.

The doctors tried to save his life by working on him for nearly an hour, but the boy died at 3:06 pm local time. The parents of the child were not home at the time of the incident. The dog was shot with a tranquilizer and was sent to a care center. The city Department of Health is investigating. The dog may have to be put down because of the incident.

According to the US Centers for Disease Control, the Doberman Pinscher is not frequently involved in fatal attacks on humans in comparison to several other dog breeds such as German Shepherds , Rottweilers and others.

UH-60 Black Hawk helicopter crashes at Texas A&M, kills one, injures four

Sunday, January 18, 2009

A United States Army UH-60 Black Hawk helicopter crashed Monday (before 3:00 pm CST) after takeoff at Duncan Field at Campus of Texas A&M University, during a routine mission flight shuttling cadets from the university to Camp Swift. Two active-duty soldiers were killed in the crash, and four Army National Guard soldiers were injured.

Second Lt. Zachary Cook, 22, a native of Lufkin, Texas and a December 2008 graduate of Texas A&M University, was killed in the incident. Cook was a member of the Reserve Officers Training Corps cadre at Texas A&M University and also graduated from Lufkin High School. U.S. Rep. Chet Edwards on Wednesday paid tribute to Cook on the floor of the U.S. Congress. “His loss brings a great sadness to his family and friends, the extended Texas A&M family, and the Army, all of us deprived of this patriotic citizen who was dedicated to serving our great nation in uniform,” he said. Edwards is a Democratic Party member of the United States House of Representatives from the 17th District of Texas, based about Waco.

The crash also killed Sgt. Charles C. Mitts, 42, of Spring, Texas. He died about 9 p.m. Wednesday night at Memorial Hermann Hospital, said hospital spokeswoman Ann Brimberry. Mitts was the oldest of five men on board the ill-fated helicopter. He was assigned to Iraq from September 2006 to September 2007 with Company C of the 1st Battalion, 108th Aviation Regiment, based in Topeka, Kansas. Mitts was posthumously promoted from his present rank, Chief Master Sgt. Gonda Moncada announced.

The three others on board the UH-60 Black Hawk were injured in the accident. The pilot, Chief Warrant Officer 2 Matthew J. Smith, 41, of Leander, and 1st Lt. Ellis W. Taylor, 31, of Buda, were in stable condition Thursday at Brooke Army Medical Center. Sgt. Richard D. Ravenscraft, 24, of Austin, also was initially listed as critical but upgraded to stable in College Station.

The accident is under investigation by the Combat Readiness/Safety Center in Fort Rucker, Alabama, home of the U.S. Army Aviation Center. “They have a reputation for extreme thoroughness and quickness,” said Texas Guard Capt. Adam Collett. The probe team will review the wrecked helicopter and debris scattered on Duncan Field next to Duncan Dining Hall, near the Corps of Cadets field on the school’s College Station campus, about 100 miles northwest of Houston, Texas. “Every piece the way it landed is still in place,” said Texas Army National Guard Chief Master Sgt. Gonda Moncada, adding that investigators began the expert examination of evidence Wednesday morning.

As part of a five-ship training exercise, the Blackhawk helicopter was performing a training demonstration for about 190 Corps of Cadets in the ROTC Rudder’s Rangers Annual Winter Field Training Exercises. It was also used to transfer the students to Duncan Field just off George Bush Drive. When the helicopter was attempting to take off, a rudder reportedly malfunctioned. “At first, it looked like he was hot-dogging and then very quickly it was obvious he was in trouble and not messing around. All of a sudden he dropped straight back down into the ground,” Scott Walker Walker, publications manager for the A&M Association of Former Students said. “There was a bunch of people on Duncan Field and everyone went running and diving for cover,” he added. The aircraft entered a rotational spin upon take off and plummeted down on its tail boom, with its cabin section largely intact.

The chopper will be transferred to the Austin Aviation Support Facility, where it is was based. Some parts of the Blackhawk will also be sent to the Corpus Christi Army Depot for testing, Officials with Texas Military Forces officials said.

“Our thoughts and prayers go to the crew members involved in this tragedy, and especially to the family and friends of the crew member who reportedly died as a result of injuries sustained in the crash,” A&M President Elsa Murano stated.

The UH-60 Black Hawk is a four-bladed, twin-engine, medium-lift utility helicopter manufactured by Sikorsky Aircraft. It is a utility tactical transport helicopter that replaces the UH-1 “Huey” and has been in use since 1979.It was based at the Austin Army Aviation Support Facility at Austin-Bergstrom International Airport. The aircraft’s soldiers came from Austin and San Antonio. They were part of the 36th Combat Aviation Brigade, at Austin’s Camp Mabry.

The Campus of Texas A&M University, also known as ‘Aggieland’, is located in College Station, Texas, USA. College Station is a city in Brazos County, Texas, situated in Central Texas. It is located in the heart of the Brazos Valley. Aggieland is centrally located within of three of the 10 largest cities in the United States and 75% of the Texas and Louisiana populations. Southside of the campus contains halls both for the Corps of Cadets members and “non-regs”. Facilities for the Corps of Cadets are located in the Quadrangle, or “The Quad”, an area consisting of dormitories, Duncan Dining Hall, and the Corps training fields.

Slip And Fall Attorney Can Help You Receive Compensation For Injury

If youve injured yourself after tripping over an obstruction, damaged area, or spill, you may be entitled to payment of your medical bills as well as compensation for any pain and suffering. If you want to take action, you should contact a slip and fall attorney immediately. Waiting can result in valuable evidence being lost as well as less willingness for other parties to settle a matter outside of court. Theres no need to fear a drawn out event as well. With a qualified slip and fall attorney representing you, there is a much greater likelihood of wrapping the case quickly and with less stress than pursuing payment of your bills independently. So when is it time to seek legal aid if youve suffered injury? If the floor was damaged in any way, you already have the grounds for a reasonable case. It is up to the owners of the property to provide proper maintenance and safety, and in the event that there is damage that can potentially be harmful, to have adequate warning signs surrounding the spot to alert people of the threat. This is not to say you should immediately contact a slip and fall attorney if you happen to trip over a natural crack in a pathway, but holes, flooring that gives way under a normal amount of weight, or something that is in obvious need of repair can be just cause to receive compensation for any injury you may have received.Substances on the floor, such as soapy water or spilled liquids may also be grounds to contact a slip and fall attorney. Areas that have been mopped, polished, or cleaned otherwise should be clearly marked off. Spills can be a more difficult area, as it can depend on how long the liquid was there, how the accident happened, and where it was located. For example, if you are picking up your car in the garage and there is some oil drippings on the shop floor that you slip on, you may not have a very strong case as that would be something you would anticipate in the area. Even if the circumstances are unclear, when you do have significant injury, especially if it requires medical attention, you should get in touch with a slip and fall attorney.Regardless of where the accident occurred, at work, public, or private, it is important to seek medical assistance as soon as possible and not to accept any cash or other bribes from the owner of the property or your employer. Accepting anything may be deemed compensation and you might not be able to receive anything further, especially so if youve signed anything or admitted that no one was at fault in front of witnesses. That is not to say if you have taken anything or signed documents that you still have no legal recourse. When discussing the matter with a slip and fall attorney, explain to them in detail anything you took or were offered as well as supply copies of any medical reports or documents you were asked or felt obligated to sign.

Bolivian president announces legal action over Obama’s ‘crimes against humanity’

Correction — October 4, 2013 The last paragraph of this article should say “President Maduro” rather than “President Morales”. We apologize for the error.

Saturday, September 21, 2013

The Bolivian President Evo Morales announced Thursday he will file legal charges against the United States President Barack Obama for crimes against humanity. President Morales announced he was preparing litigation after Venezuelan President Nicholas Maduro’s plane was allegedly denied entry into U.S. airspace over Puerto Rico.

President Morales called Obama a “criminal” violating international law. Morales called an emergency meeting of the Community of Latin American and Caribbean States (CELAC), made up of 33 member states including Argentina, Mexico and Chile, and encouraged member states to remove their ambassadors from the U.S. to show their solidarity. He asked Bolivarian Alliance member states to boycott the next United Nations meeting, to be held in New York on September 24. He also said the U.S. had pursued a policy of “intimidation” and have a history of blockading presidential flights.

In July this year, the Bolivian presidential aircraft was prevented from landing in Portugal to refuel, allegedly at the request of the U.S. administration. After Italy, Spain and France each banned the aircraft from entering their airspace, it was ultimately forced to land in Austria. Here, the plane was boarded as part of the search for U.S. fugitive Edward Snowden. Several Latin American heads of state promptly condemned the actions.

President Evo Morales is in his second presidential term after first being elected in 2005. He campaigned on the promise of alleviating Bolivia’s crippling poverty — Bolivia was Latin America’s poorest nation at the time he was elected — and is Bolivia’s first indigenous leader. He became internationally recognisable for the striped jumper he wore while meeting with high level dignitaries, including kings and presidents, around the world. His actions as President have included halving his own salary and those of his ministers, seizing Bolivia’s gas and oil reserves, and redistributing the nation’s unused countryside to the poor.

President Morales had been bound for bilateral talks in China. He maintains he will not be prevented from attending them.

Florida frog skull survey shows spikes, say scientists

Thursday, March 26, 2020

In a new study released by the Florida Museum of Natural History on Monday, scientists report spiky skulls evolved at least 25 separate times in different kinds of frogs. The survey was reportedly to be published in Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences.

Lead author Daniel Paluh, a Ph.D. candidate at the University of Florida, said, “Superficially, frogs may look similar, but when you look at their skulls, you see drastic differences […] Some of the weirdest skulls are found in frogs that eat birds and mammals, use their heads as a shield, or in a few rare cases, are venomous. Their skulls show how strange and diverse frogs can be.”

Some scientists had previously suggested smaller frogs would tend to develop spiky skulls, but that is not what this study reports. Here, researchers evaluated CT scans on 158 different species. They found frogs that had similar ecological niches — meaning they either acquired food in the same way or defended themselves from predators in the same way — tended to develop skulls with similar grooves, spikes, or specialized jaw joints regardless of whether they were ancestrally related to each other.

According to the study, skulls with spikes, grooves or ridges — called hyperossification — often accompanied frogs eating very large prey relative to their own body size. The strong, spacious skulls would allow the frogs to have very big mouths with which to catch birds, rodents, reptiles and other frogs. Spikes sometimes coincided with venomous frogs. The researchers speculated the spikes make it dangerous for predators to hit the frog’s head, as the spikes would break venom sacs under the frog’s skin.

Other bone formations included projections resembling fangs or lower teeth that different species of frogs use for catching prey and fighting. Very few frogs have true lower teeth.

One of the study’s authors, herpetologist David Blackburn, told Discover Magazine the frequency of spiky skulls evolving in otherwise unrelated frogs suggested some deep pattern frogs fell into as circumstances arose: “Somehow, these frogs are turning on some ancient developmental machinery in their DNA.”

Since 1973, when frogs skulls were last comprehensively surveyed, scientists have documented enough new species to double the number known to humans. Also, modern techniques exploit CT scans, of which Paluh and his team made liberal use. The research was part of the oVert project, funded by the National Science Foundation, meant to comprehensively CT-scan over 20,000 vertebrate specimens from United States museums.

Florida judge awards Zimmerman $150,000 bond in Trayvon Martin shooting

Sunday, April 22, 2012

George Zimmerman, the Florida neighborhood watch captain who faces second-degree murder charges for shooting and killing Trayvon Martin, took the stand Friday in a Florida courtroom for a bond hearing. While on stand, Zimmerman apologized to the parents of 17-year-old Trayvon Martin.

“I am sorry for the loss of your son. I did not know how old he was. I thought he was a little bit younger than I am. I did not know if he was armed or not,” Zimmerman said addressing Martin’s family directly.

Judge Kenneth Lester granted Zimmerman with a US$150,000 bond, about €100,000, at the conclusion of the hearing. Zimmerman will also have to wear a GPS monitoring device. Mark O’Mara, Zimmerman’s attorney, said it will take some time to collect bail and that he expects Zimmerman to be released from custody within a few days.

Prosecutor Bernie De La Rionda argued Zimmerman should not have been allowed bond or if he was given bond that it should have been set at US$1 million, which is about €750,000.

A photograph obtained by ABC News could give credibility to Zimmerman’s story. The photo is of Zimmerman’s head, covered in blood. Zimmerman claims Martin had pummeled his head into the concrete during their fight. Robert Zimmerman, a former magistrate and the accused’s father, testified in regards to Zimmerman’s injuries after Martin was killed.

“His face was swollen quite a bit,” Robert Zimmerman said. “There was a protective cover over his nose, his lip was cut and there were two vertical gashes on the back of his head.”

During the hearing, O’Mara questioned State Attorney’s Investigator, Dale Gilbreath, who confessed that no clear evidence has been found that proves Zimmerman attacked Martin first.

I am sorry for the loss of your son. I did not know how old he was. I thought he was a little bit younger than I am. I did not know if he was armed or not.

Zimmerman’s family insisted that Zimmerman was not a violent person.

“He’s absolutely not a violent person or a threat to the community,” said Zimmerman’s wife, Shellie.

Zimmerman’s wife and parents were fearful of their safety and testified through phone at the hearing. Shellie asked the court keep Zimmerman’s address secret once he is released for fear of his safety.
