Anonymous muscle in on Canadian teen rape case

Friday, April 12, 2013

On Wednesday, the Internet hacking collective Anonymous vowed to publish the names of the four suspects involved in the alleged rape of Canadian Rehtaeh Parsons, who committed suicide last week.

A message sent to Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP) by the hacktivist group called “for immediate legal action” in the case, citing that “If we [Anonymous] were able to locate these boys within 2 hours, it will not be long before someone else finds them.”

This latest operation by the group, dubbed “Operation Justice For Rehtaeh”, led to expression of concern among the members of the RCMP. In an interview with the National Post, Nova Scotia Justice Minister Ross Landry spoke of the dangers of releasing this crucial information in this ongoing investigation, “We don’t want another child taking their life because some vigilante group think it’s OK … maybe it’s a wrong name — then what would they do to someone?”

The 17-year-old Parsons was taken off life support on Sunday following an attempt to take her own life days before. Her mother erected a Facebook page celebrating the life of her daughter as well as acknowledging the true reasons for her daughters tragic passing, “Rehtaeh is gone today because of the four boys that thought that raping a 15-year-old girl was okay, and to distribute a photo to ruin her spirit and reputation would be fun.”

Teen broadcasts suicide online

Sunday, November 23, 2008

A Pembroke Pines, Florida teenager killed himself Wednesday, November 19, while broadcasting on the live video site Justin.tv. After making suicide threats and being encouraged by Justin.tv viewers and Bodybuilding.com forum members, Abraham K. Biggs, 19, committed suicide by taking an overdose of opiates and benzodiazepine, which had been prescribed for his bipolar disorder.

Biggs first began blogging about his planned suicide 12 hours before the actual event. He died after taking pills and lying on the bed in front of the webcam. After the broadcast, viewers who apparently thought it was a hoax posted messages such as “OMG”, “LOL”, and “hahahah”.

Hours later, after being alerted by viewers who had noticed that Biggs had stopped breathing, law enforcement and paramedics arrived, discovered his body, and covered the camera. The Broward County Medical Examiner’s Office has reportedly confirmed Biggs’ death.

According to Montana Miller of the Bowling Green State University, the circumstances of this case were not shocking: “If it’s not recorded or documented, then it doesn’t even seem worthwhile. For today’s generation it might seem, ‘What’s the point of doing it if everyone isn’t going to see it?'”

Biggs’ sister Rosalind was angry that neither the website nor its viewers reacted soon enough to save him. “They got hits, they got viewers, nothing happened for hours,” she said. She described him as “very happy” and “friendly and outgoing.” “On a normal day, you couldn’t really tell that he got as low as he did.” However, he did have relationship problems with his girlfriend, according to a friend.

Mental health professionals have warned about the possibility that other mentally troubled people would copy his actions. According to Dr. David Shaffer of Columbia University, “Any video showing it as heroic or romantic or glamorous could reduce the anxiety people might feel about suicide. It becomes a respectable behavior and lowers the threshold of suicide.” He and other psychiatrists recommend that potentially suicidal teens talk to others and “tell what’s going on.”

Different Types Of Vacuum Pumps And Systems

Vacuum pumps and systems are necessary for maintaining the proper level of pressure in a system. They are used in countless applications in many different environments, from the home to large industrial complexes. Because liquids cannot be pulled, suction cannot be used to create a vacuum. Therefore it becomes necessary to create an artificial vacuum, and the easiest way that this can be accomplished is by expanding the air that is in a container. In order to evacuate a chamber constantly, these machines contain a compartment that is always being closed off, emptied, and them expanded once again. This is the principle by which these machines work.

Busch vacuum pumps and systems are now available in many different shapes and sizes. You will find that they operate on the same basic principles, but the larger ones for industrial needs are much more complex. The following is a brief list of the different types that have been developed so far:

Rotary vane by far the most commonly usedDiaphragm no contamination from oilLiquid ringPiston the lowest priceScroll features the highest speed for a dry pumpExternal VaneRoots Blower also known as a booster; it has a high pumping rate, but low compressionMultistage roots uses several stages to produce both high speeds and compression

Kinney vacuum pumps and systems also make use of several different types of techniques in order to achieve their purpose. Often times this involves the use of multiple chambers, pumps, and procedures. For example, positive displacement pumps can create only small vacuums due to mechanical limitations. These stronger vacuums must be created using a more complex series of stages typically starting out with a fast pump down. There are many different types of combinations that can be used in order to achieve the desired results.

So, now that you understand a bit more about how these Edwards vacuum pumps and systems work, it is time to discuss a few of the situations where they can be used. There are many different industries and uses for these machines, including, but not limited to the following: composite plastic molding, flight instruments in aircraft, the production of electric lamps and CRTs, processing of semiconductors, electron microscopy, vacuum coating, freeze drying, trash compacting, sewage treatment, and many more.

This article contains only a few examples of the many different options you have when it comes to vacuum pumps and systems. When looking for the right one for your application, it is a good idea to use the type of product that is recommended by the manufacturer or your equipment. While there are companies that deal in these products all over the world, you will get the best service when you choose someone close to you.

Will Wikimedia “run on Sun”?

Wednesday, January 9, 2008

This article mentions the Wikimedia Foundation, one of its projects, or people related to it. Wikinews is a project of the Wikimedia Foundation.

An internal Wikimedia communiqué was leaked over the weekend. Like many e-mails, the document is a chain of forwards, replies, and attachments. The attached Portable Document Format (PDF) file was from a PowerPoint presentation, entitled “Wikimedia Foundation: Past, Present, and Future”. The presentation is watermarked confidential, do not distribute, and details the Foundation’s recent financial, technical, and traffic history, outlines near-term forecasts for all three, and makes suggestions for slightly longer horizons as well. By itself the document led to several inter-connected news stories.

Thousands strike in UK over pensions

Tuesday, March 28, 2006

As many as 1.5 million government workers, members of 11 unions, went on strike on Tuesday in protest of a government decision to reduce their retirement benefits, a change which would take effect in October.

The strike closed thousands of schools, libraries and leisure centres, disrupted commuters, and reduced some facilities to emergency only staffing.

UNISON claimed that more than a million workers had joined the strike, with General Secretary Dave Prentis saying “this overwhelming show of strength from Lands End to John O’Groats has obviously taken the Local Government Association and some local councils by surprise”.

The benefits change, would effect the “85 year rule,” of the Local Government Pension scheme, which allows government employees to retire at 60 as long as the sum of their age and their years of employment sum to 85 or greater. According to union representatives, the new retirement plan is targeted at lower paid employees, leaving higher paid employees to enjoy the same benefits as before.

Ahead of the strike, the Local Government Association claimed that the changes proposed by unions “would add at least 2% a year to every council taxpayer’s bill”.

The participating unions point out this is likely to be the largest strike in Britain since 1926.

Weight Loss Advice Have You Ever Seen A Fat Postman

By Steve Hill

This article is all about how to lose weight, I hope you find it interesting to read and beneficial. I am somebody who has always struggled to keep off the fat and who has tried many different forms of diet.

From about the age of twelve, I have had problems with my weight. I have to be careful what I eat and I personally believe I actually eat less than what other people do. One of the issues I do have though is that I like the wrong types of food. Vegetables, fruit, salad and pasta do not really do it for me, where as fast foods such as pizza, chips and curry do.

Another one of my bad habits is that from the age of around sixteen I started to get a taste and a liking for alcohol. I have to admit that from this age I have always drank far too much and far more than the average man. You may well be thinking at this point that it is was no wonder that I have had problems controlling my weight.

In my defence, I have had many confidence issues and suffered with a low self-esteem for many years. This would cause me to binge drink and comfort eat. When hungover I would eat copius amounts of these fatty foods to make me feel better.

By the age of twenty-two I was basically very fat or obese. I decided at this stage of my life to do something about this and started looking into various forms of diet.

Maybe it is just me but these weight loss programs seemed very harsh and very unrealistic. Drinking taste-less milkshakes four times a day, eating five fruits a day and not being able to drink alcohol, no thanks. Following these diets would make my life not really worth living and I knew that I would not be able to stick to them.

One morning I saw three different postmen delivering their rounds. They were all quite thin, at a weight I would love to be. Over the next few weeks I kept an eye out for other postmen and realised that the ones I had observed were all thin. I thought about why would this be, quite simply because they do a lot of exercise via walking.

I sat myself down and started to think. I had to admit to myself that I do very little exercise and I use my car to take me to virtually every place I go.

The answer was quite simple, I need to, at times walk my children to school, walk to my friends and in general ensure I exercise far much more than I was.

This has, I am happy to report helped my tremendously and I now have a weight I am happy with.

New Zealand meteorologist Auer dies

Monday, June 11, 2007

New Zealand Meteorologist Augie Auer has died, suffering a heart attack while dining with family members in Melbourne. He was on holiday celebrating his 67th birthday and 35th wedding anniversary with wife Susan and family.

Auer was chief meteorologist at the MetService from 1990 until 1998, when Professor Auer became TV3’s weekday weather presenter and the network’s resident meteorologist in 2002.

Professor Auer recently became involved in the debate over global warming, helping in 2006 to found the New Zealand Climate Science Coalition, a group that questions claims humanity is responsible for rising temperatures

The coalition was chaired by retired Rear Admiral Jack Welch and made up of 13 scientists, including Prof Auer, Professor Bob Carter and Associate Professor Chris de Freitas.

The group believed the public was being given incomplete, inaccurate and biased information about the effects of greenhouse gases in the atmosphere.

It called for a Royal Commission to investigate climate change.

Professor Augie Auer is survived by his wife, three children and five grandchildren.

Violence at Cronulla Beach as 5000 people gather

Monday, December 12, 2005

Cronulla Beach in Sydney, New South Wales was the scene of racist mob-violence yesterday. In what has been described as disgusting, un-Australian and shameful behaviour, participants in a 5000-strong mob assaulted people suspected of being of Lebanese origin. The angry, alcohol-fuelled crowd also turned on anyone who tried to help the victims, including police, security guards and ambulance officers.

Following an attack on two lifeguards earlier in the week, allegedly by men of Lebanese descent, a protest had been organised via text messages and a small number of usenet postings.

Sutherland Shire Mayor Kevin Schreiber says inflammatory text messages calling for revenge attacks fueled the violence. Mr Schreiber said the heavily-circulated messages ensured troublemakers went to the southern Sydney beach looking for a fight. Police had patrolled the area all weekend after text messages began circulating among the community calling for vigilante responses to unwelcome visitors on the beach.

“The sending out of that text message was foolish and irresponsible and ensured that people from all over Sydney came to Cronulla looking to cause trouble and this was further fueled by alcohol,” said Mr Schreiber.

Sydney’s popular talk-back radio station 2GB also promoted Sunday’s event. Breakfast announcer Alan Jones has been accused of “fanning the flames.” Callers who recommended vigilante action were not discouraged to take the law into their own hands. Mr Jones, notorious for inflammatory comments, repeated the text message for Cronulla residents to defend their territory several times.

As the crowd marched along the beach and foreshore area, waving Australian flags, the crowd chanted racist slogans, with many wearing clothes bearing racist sentiment.

Middle Eastern men were openly targeted and assaulted. A young Muslim woman wearing a veil was chased into a kiosk on Cronulla beach. Police tried to move her away from the chanting crowd but were unable to reach the security of the command post. While the woman and police officers hid in the kiosk, a crowd surrounded the kiosk and shouted “Kill the Lebs”, while others climbed on top of the kiosk.

As police horses and special operations officers formed a line and pushed the crowd away, they were bombarded with beer bottles. After half an hour, an ambulance arrived at the kiosk and people were loaded into it. The ambulance, transporting six injured youths, escorted by police and police horses, was also bombarded with beer bottles. One struck an ambulance officer on the head. His colleague suffered lacerations to the arm.
