Ontario college teachers begin strike

Tuesday, March 7, 2006

All across the Canadian province of Ontario, college teachers have gone on strike, leaving more than 150,000 students in 24 colleges without classes.

The Ontario Public Service Employees Union rejected the final offer from college management, after negotiations at the Delta Chelsea Hotel in downtown Toronto.

This strike comes just a month before many student’s scheduled graduations. If courses are extended into the summer, to compensate for lost school time, students’ ability to maintain jobs to pay for their education would be severely limited.

“A prolonged strike would not only affect college students, but also have a ripple affect on the Ontario economy and workforce. Potential employers are expecting 44,000 new graduates and 100,000 returning students to enter the workforce this May, families have made summer plans, and some seasonal businesses may experience a significant loss if the school year does not finish on time,” says Tyler Charlebois, Director of Advocacy for the College Student Alliance. “I hope for the sake of Ontario, the provincial government takes this situation as seriously as we are and takes action as necessary.”

OPSEU was asking for more teachers, smaller classes, and more faculty time for students. A strike vote was 80.4% in favour of action. Humber had the least support for the strike, with only 67.0%, followed by St. Lawrence with 67.7%. St. Clair, Boréal, Centennial, and Sault all had more than 90% support.

Honda Civic tops Canada’s list of most stolen cars

Wednesday, November 22, 2006

The 1999 and 2000 year model Honda Civic SiR tops the list of Canada’s most stolen cars.

Consumer popularity also assures the cars will be popular with thieves. Its the second year in a row the Honda SiR has topped the list.

Rick Dubin Vice President of Investigations for the Insurance Bureau of Canada said “The Civics are easy targets.”

Dubin said that once stolen, the cars are most often sold to “chop shops” where thieves completely dismantle the vehicles. The automobile’s individual parts are worth more than the entire car.

The sheer numbers of the cars and their lack of theft deterrent systems make them thieves’ preferred choices.

1999 and 2000 Honda Civics do not come with an electronic immobilizer, however all Hondas from 2001 and onward are equipped with an immobilizer. Immobilizers will be mandatory on all new cars sold beginning September 2007. The devices enable an engine computer to recognize an electronic code in the key. If the code in the key and the engine don’t match exactly, the vehicle can’t be started.

In third place was the 2004 Subaru Impreza, while the 1999 Acura Integra came in fourth, with the 1994 Honda Civic rounding out the top five.

In sixth place, the 1998 Acura Integra, and the 1993 Dodge Shadow completed seventh.

When asked why early model vehicles are selected, he said that, “auto thieves continue to find it easier to steal older vehicles lacking an IBC-approved immobilizer. We’ve seen this trend developing for several years, and these results confirm it.”

Another Honda automobile, the 1996 year model Civic filled eighth place, with the 2000 German Audi TT Quattro in ninth.

The American 1996 Chevrolet/GMC Blazer rounded out the top ten.

None of the above cars had an electronic immobilizer.

A Policy Form To Be Given To All Home Health Care Aide Applicants

A Policy Form to Be Given to All Home Health Care Aide Applicants

by

Renae Clare

Having had MS for 40 years has given me many coping mechanisms. One of the things that I have learned is how to set and keep the boundaries between employer and employee. In the comprehensive list below you can learn how to set boundaries and what is expected of a home health aide.

Policy Form to Be Given to All Home Health Care Aide Applicants You must go through an intensive training program and be able to complete certain tasks, which include: — You must be able to lift and transfer the person in your care to and from the toilet, bed, shower, wheelchair, or anywhere else the patient wishes to go in a safe and strong manner, not putting him or her in any danger. Learn how to properly and safely help your patient to transfer and move about. — You must always retain a professional manner, not discussing your personal problems, money problems, health issues, or your family information. You are there to care for your patient, not to burden him/her with problems of your own. — You must not take or make personal calls while you are on the job. Handle your personal life when you are on your own time. — You must pay attention to your patient and do things that he or she requests in a manner that you are told. — You must never ask for food or drinks other than water while you are on your job. — Do not take advantage of your patient’s disability in any way, shape, or form. Your patient has you there because there are things that he/she can no longer do. He/she is in a vulnerable position, and taking advantage of him/her is unconscionable and will not be tolerated. — Be on time. If you find it necessary to be late or cannot be there on the appointed day, make sure that you call your patient as soon as possible. Do not make the patient wait for you unnecessarily, thereby causing him/her stress and making him/her have to adjust his/her schedule to suit yours. And never make the patient have to track you down by calling you or the agency that has hired you. — The person in your charge is your boss, and you will act accordingly by being polite, cheerful, and caring and by doing a professional and thorough job with whatever task is asked of you, just as you would with any other employer. — Do not rush or cut corners so that you can get out of there as soon as possible. You are being paid with taxpayer money or money from the patient him/herself or his/her family, and therefore, you are expected to work hard and not to make excuses for a substandard work ethic. — Laziness will not be tolerated. If you are asked to do something, do it with a concentrated effort and to the best of your ability. Take personal pride in your work, knowing that you are doing something of worth and importance. Not everyone is able to take on being a home health care aide, and if you do your job well, you are invaluable. — Make sure that you ask your patient if there is anything else you can do for him/her before you leave. Make sure that he/she is comfortable and satisfied with the work you have done for him/her. — If you have any questions about where something belongs or how the patient would like something to be done, ask him/her. Don’t just put things where you feel like it or do things your own way no matter the consequences. — Just because the person in your care has a disability does not mean that he/she is ignorant or not aware of your actions. Realize that it is hard for people with disabilities to ask for help and to be assertive, so it is up to you to make sure that things are done for their convenience and not for yours. — Never put your patient in an uncomfortable position of having to be afraid of you or to feel that you will take measures to intimidate him/her by being verbally or physically abusive or by your body language. To do so is not only immoral but also illegal, and if you are such a person, you must be prepared to take the consequences. — Do not ever ask your patient for money. It is cause for immediate dismissal. — Do not complain about circumstances in your own life. The person in your care has enough to worry about and should not be put under any more stress than he/she already has. — If you are tired or having a bad day, do not take it out on your patient. More than likely, he or she is having a much worse day than you are. — Theft of any kind will not be tolerated; it is unconscionable, illegal, and cause for immediate dismissal as well as prosecution. — If your patient is in a wheelchair or lying in bed, do not hover over him/her, thereby making the person uncomfortable because you are in a higher position. It is rude to your patient, and your job is to make him/her feel as good about him/herself as you possibly can. — Always treat the person in your care as you would wish to be treated if you were in his/her situation. Be compassionate, caring, and helpful. There may come a day when you yourself will need the help of an aide. Act as the aide that you would wish to have in your home taking care of you.

British Business Secretary Cable stripped of powers after ‘totally unacceptable and inappropriate’ comments

Tuesday, December 21, 2010

British Business Secretary Vince Cable has tonight been reprimanded by Prime Minister David Cameron after saying he was “at war” with Rupert Murdoch over News Corporation’s attempts to take full control of BSkyB.

Cable will remain in the cabinet, but he will have no further role in the takeover bid. A statement released by officials in Downing Street said Cable’s comments were “totally unacceptable and inappropriate”. The statement confirmed Cable will no longer have responsibility over matters relating to media and broadcasting.

In a secret recording made by journalists from a British newspaper posing as members of the electorate, Cable said he had already decided to block the takeover bid. “I am picking my fights, some of which you may have seen, some of which you may haven’t seen,” he said in the recording. “I don’t know if you have been following what has been happening with the Murdoch press, where I have declared war on Mr Murdoch and I think we are going to win.”

I have declared war on Mr Murdoch and I think we are going to win

In another extract from the recording, Cable says: “I have blocked it [the takeover bid], using the powers that I have got. And they are legal powers that I have got. I can’t politicise it, but for the people who know what is happening, this is a big thing. His whole empire is now under attack. So there are things like that, that being in Government … All we can do in opposition is protest.”

News Corporation, owned by Murdoch, owns 39% of BSkyB, but wishes to purchase the other 61% for £7.8 billion. Cable had pledged to remain impartial in the decision, and had ordered Ofcom to investigate the takeover bid. News Corporation stated they were “shocked and dismayed” at Cable’s comments, and said they “raise serious questions about fairness and due process.”

A source inside Downing Street said the government took “swift and firm action” in stripping Cable of his powers over the takeover bid. “He will have absolutely nothing to do with media,” the source added.

The business secretary apologised for his remarks, saying: “I fully accept the decision of the Prime Minister and Deputy Prime Minister. I deeply regret the comments I made and apologise for the embarrassment that I have caused the Government.” Political commentator Nick Robinson said although he remained in office, Cable is in a “very awkward” position, because the statement from Downing Street was, for Cable, a “humiliating slap in the face.” Cable refused to answer journalists’ questions as he arrived at his constituency home in Twickenham, London.

Now When Was The previous Time You Considered Electrical Power

by

Gino Catinella

There is a collective search for new sources of power which will not damage the world. We live in a world that is a real mess, with lots of pollution, and poverty, and corruption. Many individuals – and companies – are troubled about this and are carrying out action to effect a lowering of greenhouse gases and other pollutants. Inexhaustible sources of energy are preferred since they do not produce the poisons commonly associated as an energy byproduct. Most people are still uneducated when it comes to renewable energy, and how it can have an effect on their lives. What follows is some basic information and a list of a few alternative sources of energy. In particular I will be investigating the majority of the methods i\’m positive you\’ve probably heard of before just like solarkinguk.com , wind turbines for example however we are going to be searching to expose some new aspects on the choices.

Solar energy traps the energy in the rays of the sun in solar cells, and it is perhaps the best-known alternative source of energy. The rays of the sun are stored in thermal panels which convert the heat to electrical energy. One other way is to let the rays hit parabolic mirrors and produce steam and heat up the water. You don\’t need anything scientific just so you can take advantage of the sun, as you can let heat and light in by simply opening a window or the blinds. Of course, one problem is that the sun\’s energy can\’t be stored easily when it\’s foggy or nighttime. Due to the cost involved, there are not a lot of big solar power stations.

Also currently growing in popularity is wind energy. A common sight from the highway nowadays is the wind-mill blades of wind turbines. A generator, run by the blades being propelled by the wind, makes electrical power. Electrical networks nationally are right now being fed electrical energy from large-scale wind farms. On a smaller scale, homes and commercial enterprises are getting their own wind turbines. Two significant aspects of this source of energy is that the wind endlessly blows and the method has no damaging byproducts.

From the bottom of the earth is the renewable source of power known as geothermal. In certain locations, holes are being drilled into the hot rocks producing steam, which can be distilled and then utilized to drive turbines. This becomes the power source to run electric generators, and done properly will generate no insidious by-products. Although really efficient at producing energy, geothermal plants require a very high initial investment. For a long time, hydroelectric power has been used through the use of dams, using water to produce electrical power. The tidal flow of water can be very powerful, offering one other way to capture the kinetic energy of water. Unlike solarking uk solar panels this approach has been implemented on a more substantial degree for many years across the globe due to it\’s assemble ability remaining structured from the coast it is simply a short while ago that there ended up being a bigger drive in direction of solar panels by using an commercial level.

One can only be dumbfounded by the abundance contained in nature when discovering the many alternative ways it generates energy. As people of the world, we, as individuals, need to become responsible for the things around us, and the knowledge of renewable energy can provide assistance to that.

I really anticipate you found this posting beneficial as we investigated within the predicament totally, and we checked to organize a clear article that the website reader may possibly gain something from and obtain benefits of. Generally there are government advice which are typically in place to give businesses massive and tiny inside the field and the public with info that could very well aid

At least eight dead after drone strikes in Pakistan

Thursday, March 18, 2010

According to Pakistani officials, at least ten suspected terrorists were killed in North Waziristan by suspected US drone strikes earlier Wednesday. This is the second US drone attack in the span of two days.

Conflicting media reports say that the first strike consisted of either four or five missiles launched from an unmanned aerial vehicle. They hit a vehicle and a suspected rebel compound in the town of Hamzoni, killing three people.

In the second attack in the Maizar Madakhel area, another five people were reported dead. Pakistani officials say that the area is controlled by Taliban commander Hatiz Gul Bahadur.

Although the US government does not usually confirm drone strikes in Pakistan, analysts say that they are the only ones in the vicinity with access to machinery capable of carrying out said attacks.

On Tuesday, a similar double drone strike killed eight suspected rebels from the same group in the Datta Khel region of Pakistan.

According to the BBC, the US has increased drone strikes recently, and that such attacks have killed several hundred people since August 2008.

Australian Federal Police say Wikileaks committed no crime

Friday, December 17, 2010

The Australian Federal Police (AFP) has stated that the whistle-blowing website known as WikiLeaks has committed no crimes in Australia by publishing over 250,000 United States diplomatic cables. An investigation by the AFP into the release of the cables revealed that Wikileaks had not broken any laws under Australian jurisdiction.

“[The AFP has] not identified any criminal offences where Australia has jurisdiction and as a result have not commenced an investigation,” said Robert McClelland, attorney-general of Australia in a statement to the press. “As has previously been stated, given the documents published to date are classified by the United States, the primary jurisdiction for any investigation into the matter remains the United States.”

The investigation into Wikileaks actions came after the Australian Government referred the release of U.S. diplomatic cables to the AFP. McClelland stated that the Government’s reaction to the WikiLeaks issue was “prudent.” Further cables that the Government queries the legality of would also be forwarded to the AFP as well. He also added that the government remains “concerned” about the situation and “unauthorised and irresponsible distribution of classified material.”

Controversy had also been raised today after Julia Gillard changed her stance on the release of the cables from calling the action “illegal,” to calling it “grossly irresponsible,” after the AFP had released their findings. Ms Gillard said at a press-conference in Sydney today that she did not intend to say that the release of the cables was illegal, but that their theft was. Deputy leader of the opposition (Liberal Party) Julie Bishop said there was no room for Ms Gillard to “weasel out of it.”

“She is a lawyer. She well knows about the presumption of innocence,” said Bishop. She added that the prime minister’s legal background did not warrant her comments. Calls have also been voiced by the Green’s Senator, Scott Ludlam, for Ms Gillard to retract her comments.

Wikileaks has been the subject of past investigations in Australia. In March of 2009, the proposed Australian Communications and Media Authority internet blacklist was leaked to the website. That matter was also referred to the AFP, who later abandoned pursuing criminal charges.

“It’s my understanding from the AFP that they considered the prospects of success under their guidelines, but it wasn’t sufficient to get a prosecution,” said Chairman Chris Chapman during a Senate Estimates Committee meeting in February.

DNA Testing Immigration

by

John Bridges

DNA stands for deoxyribonucleic acid; it carries the information of the genes in the body cells. The DNA is located in the cell Nucleus. The Human body consists of nearly 3 billion bases of which approximately 99% are similar in all human beings, what distinguishes each human being from the other is the arrangement of the DNA i.e. its sequence and order and pairing.

An important characteristic of DNA is that it can duplicate itself and make exact blueprints of itself. It becomes vital when cells divide because each new cell has an accurate copy of the DNA present in the old cell. It is a thin, long and looks like a string. A person’s colour of the eyes, hair, and density of bones, built is governed by DNA. DNA testing is also done for immigration. There is an extensive choice of testing methods available to ascertain the biological relationship for immigration; it includes both paternity and maternity tests. At Determigene, DNA testing immigration is a simple process. For undertaking the DNA Testing for immigration, Paperwork from the Embassy is needed that requests for the proof of relationship between the client and the beneficiary. Complete contact information of the person is recorded before the test is taken like full name, residence address and contact details. Before initiating the test a half payment is submitted by the client. After the preliminary formalities are completed, the DNA collection kit that consists of Forms for submission, instructions on sampling & is sent to the Embassy. Thereafter the Embassy arranges the beneficiary’s appointment to collect the sample in the foreign country. This sometimes can be time consuming due to limited staff availability at the embassy. As for the client within the country arrangement for sample collection at a convenient location is made. Post collection of the sample it is sent back to the laboratories. After all the required samples have reached the laboratory the DNA test is completed within a time span of 2-5 days, this depends on the kind of test performed. The DNA tests are released once the full payment has been made, the DNA test results with vivid explanation are sent to the immigration officials and the client. A few tips to keep in mind while going for a DNA test are as follows: 1. To ensure that the DNA test is taken at a Laboratory that has the required accreditation to carry out such tests. 2. Technical assistance and experienced staff will help make the process very easy. 3. Ensure the testing company chosen has the premier quality of testing tools. 4. It is very important to choose a place that keeps the test results private and confidential and under no circumstances it should be revealed to unauthorized people. 5. There are various testing companies, important to pick that are reasonably priced price to test the DNA. 6. Time taken to deliver the DNA kit and the time taken to give the DNA results.
