John Reed on Orwell, God, self-destruction and the future of writing

Thursday, October 18, 2007

It can be difficult to be John Reed.

Christopher Hitchens called him a “Bin Ladenist” and Cathy Young editorialized in The Boston Globe that he “blames the victims of terrorism” when he puts out a novel like Snowball’s Chance, a biting send-up of George Orwell‘s Animal Farm which he was inspired to write after the terrorist attacks on September 11. “The clear references to 9/11 in the apocalyptic ending can only bring Orwell’s name into disrepute in the U.S.,” wrote William Hamilton, the British literary executor of the Orwell estate. That process had already begun: it was revealed Orwell gave the British Foreign Office a list of people he suspected of being “crypto-Communists and fellow travelers,” labeling some of them as Jews and homosexuals. “I really wanted to explode that book,” Reed told The New York Times. “I wanted to completely undermine it.”

Is this man who wants to blow up the classic literary canon taught to children in schools a menace, or a messiah? David Shankbone went to interview him for Wikinews and found that, as often is the case, the answer lies somewhere in the middle.

Reed is electrified by the changes that surround him that channel through a lens of inspiration wrought by his children. “The kids have made me a better writer,” Reed said. In his new untitled work, which he calls a “new play by William Shakespeare,” he takes lines from The Bard‘s classics to form an original tragedy. He began it in 2003, but only with the birth of his children could he finish it. “I didn’t understand the characters who had children. I didn’t really understand them. And once I had had kids, I could approach them differently.”

Taking the old to make it new is a theme in his work and in his world view. Reed foresees new narrative forms being born, Biblical epics that will be played out across print and electronic mediums. He is pulled forward by revolutions of the past, a search for a spiritual sensibility, and a desire to locate himself in the process.

Below is David Shankbone’s conversation with novelist John Reed.

Lighten Your Rc Helicopters Model

You can get to know how to lighten rc helicopters models. For best performance of your models, lightness is very important, apart from a very careful construction, available to a few connoisseurs who know all the tricks.

In many online pictures you can see that points are arriving from the lighter, including electronic cables are replaced by a smaller section, other than to eliminate all unnecessary plastic. The rc helicopters propeller Axi 22o3 can be also lightened with a carbon propeller, after these light touches and quality components are obtained weights below 100 grams, this coupled with other secrets is what makes the plane has no inertia in flight.

Another way to lighten the engine, change the motor shaft, carbon steel, the results are spectacular, even the screw shaft to the housing is replaced by a carbon intern.

Steel shaft and propeller GSW

To perform this operation is very simple, apart from very fast, only doubt would be centering on the motor shaft, if undesirable vibrations appear. MicroDAM Motor, 1700 Kv, 2-3 polyps, 12.1 gms of weight. As we all know by now, the performance of our blades is one of the most important parts of the preparation of our model, both in competition and in the flight Sport. So we must keep in mind that balancing is critical to the performance of our rc helicopters propellers. Small vibrations can cause an improperly balanced propeller; it can result in a loss of power in our engine and a long-term decline. To correct my small imbalances have created the following propeller balancer. The mechanism is very simple, I just need two magnets strong enough to withstand the horizontal propeller and shaft of sharp, so we have less contact with the magnet.

In the case of a mismatch between the blades that are too high, it is not recommended (as seen in some drivers) cut the blade which weighs more, so that equal masses. This creates a performance difference between a shovel and another, a bigger problem than the imbalance of the propeller. Since a bucket pushes more than another.

If we have this gap and it is so high, it is more advisable to add weight to the lighter blade, this can be done simply with nail polish on the tip of the blade lighter. Try To clarify the rc helicopters doubts. You’ve probably seen many models in some parking lot of shopping centers, entertainment, vacant lots, soccer fields, etc. Get yours today.

Gastric bypass surgery performed by remote control

Sunday, August 21, 2005

A robotic system at Stanford Medical Center was used to perform a laparoscopic gastric bypass surgery successfully with a theoretically similar rate of complications to that seen in standard operations. However, as there were only 10 people in the experimental group (and another 10 in the control group), this is not a statistically significant sample.

If this surgical procedure is as successful in large-scale studies, it may lead the way for the use of robotic surgery in even more delicate procedures, such as heart surgery. Note that this is not a fully automated system, as a human doctor controls the operation via remote control. Laparoscopic gastric bypass surgery is a treatment for obesity.

There were concerns that doctors, in the future, might only be trained in the remote control procedure. Ronald G. Latimer, M.D., of Santa Barbara, CA, warned “The fact that surgeons may have to open the patient or might actually need to revert to standard laparoscopic techniques demands that this basic training be a requirement before a robot is purchased. Robots do malfunction, so a backup system is imperative. We should not be seduced to buy this instrument to train surgeons if they are not able to do the primary operations themselves.”

There are precedents for just such a problem occurring. A previous “new technology”, the electrocardiogram (ECG), has lead to a lack of basic education on the older technology, the stethoscope. As a result, many heart conditions now go undiagnosed, especially in children and others who rarely undergo an ECG procedure.

Seventeen injured after coach overturns near Oxford, England

Monday, December 13, 2010

At least seventeen people were admitted to an Oxford hospital after a coach, operated by the Oxford Tube service, overturned while exiting the M40 motorway near Thame, Saturday evening. There were no other vehicles involved according to Thames Valley Police.

The incident took place at around 2300 GMT Saturday night at junction seven of the M40 near Milton Common, when a coach, belonging to the Oxford Tube service, overturned on a slip road. A police spokesperson stated “The exit slip at junction seven was closed, as well as the A329 in both directions either side of the M40. The coach is in the process of being recovered from the motorway.” The motorway itself remained open.

Sergeant Steve Blackburn of Thames Valley Police stated that “The vast majority [of passengers] were walking wounded or not injured at all and were released either at the scene or shortly after receiving some treatment.”

John Nixon from Oxfordshire Fire and Rescue noted that the coach was lying on its side on an embankment, stating that his crews’ priority had been to stabilise the coach. He added, “There were people laid on the side of the embankment, on the road, covered in space-type blankets to keep them warm”

Although there were no fatalities, five of the injured required surgery, which was undertaken at Oxford’s John Radcliffe hospital. Of the other admissions, a number were discharged by Sunday morning.

A spokesperson for the Oxford Tube was quoted by the BBC as stating that, “Safety is our absolute priority and our immediate thoughts are with those who have been injured in the accident.” They added, “We will be carrying out our own internal investigation and assisting the police in any way that we can with their inquiries into the accident.”

Police have already begun an investigation into the cause of the accident and have requested witnesses come forward.

Anyone who witnessed the incident is asked to contact Three Mile Cross roads policing unit via Thames Valley Police’s 24-hour Enquiry Centre on 08458 505 505

Cheap Garage Shelving And Storage Tips

By Dan Karas

So you’ve finally decided that it’s time to organize and de-clutter your house. One of the most dreaded chores is cleaning out the garage. It may be full of much unwanted junk that has accumulated over time. There may also be many useful items stored in the garage that you would like to organize so they’ll be easy to find when you want to use them. Garage shelving or storage cabinets would be just the ticket. However, the cost implication of doing this or the issue of the money to be spent scares many. There are some simple, inexpensive garage storage ideas that will be of immense benefit to you and would not require you spending a fortune on.

* Make List Of Items Needed

The best thing to do anytime you need to purchase items for your use at home is to make a complete list of the things you’ll need to buy. Putting your garage in a good shape is not an exemption to this rule. You should start by listing the specific items you would like to store in your garage. If you have stuff you’ve been keeping for years, but never seem to use, consider letting go. You can either sell or donate the items or trash them if they are of little value. There is no point including items that will not be of use to you as they will only reduce the available space for storage on your garage shelves. This way, you will be able to save valuable time when you get to the shop and simply add the items you need to your cart.

* Go To Thrift Shops

You don’t have to spend huge sums of money for organizing and maintaining your garage, there are various approaches which involve different garage designs and garage solutions you can benefit from. Another point you can make use of is finding the right thrift shop for garage accessories in your area. Thrift shops such as GoodWill often have practical and useful garage shelves and used storage cabinets. You may also find organizing bins and other items that you can utilize in your garage project by checking out the sales being offered by notable thrift shops in your area. Although there may be many other places to go when in search of garage storage ideas, the thrift shops are undoubtedly one of the best places to begin your search.

* Attend Rummage or Garage Sales

If you live in an area where there are no thrift stores, another place where you may be assured of good buys is at rummage sales. There will be a variety of items that could be used for storage, although there is no guarantee that all the items you need will be available at only one garage sale. You may therefore need to make repeated visits to various sales before you can get to buy all the items you’ll need. One thing you would have to be mindful of though is the urge to buy items that you don’t need in your garage. Standard garage storage systems avoid keeping items that are of little or no use in the garage.

There are many more inexpensive garage storage ideas that you will discover. One thing to keep in mind is that garage organization is a skill you must acquire and it takes some effort on your part to ensure your garage remains clean and organized.

European Union rejects software patents; starts new process

Thursday, February 3, 2005Despite assurances from the European Commissioner for the Internal Market Charles McCreevy that the Council would adopt its controversial Common Position text covering Software Patents, members voted to restart the entire process with a new directive.

MEP Michel Rocard noted several “inelegancies” by the Commission in his speech against the directive, such as not taking into account any of the Parliament’s substantive amendments in its recommendation to the Council. He also took the Dutch and German governments to task for ignoring their respective parliaments. The Irish Presidency’s sponsorship by Microsoft was also criticised, as were the attempted ratifications at fishery Council meetings.

There was also confusion over the actual effects of the proposed directive with industry players confirming that the Council text allowed pure software patents, while the Commission claimed it would not.

“In the debate, broad agreement prevailed over the fact that the current proposal was counter-productive and far from a good basis for a decision,” said Italian MEP Monica Frassoni.

The computer-implemented inventions directive was voted down by members of European Parliament (MEP) in the legal affairs committee. 19 MEPs voted in favour of re-starting negotiations, 2 against with one abstention.

Jersey child abuse case ‘was not covered up’

Tuesday, February 26, 2008

Frank Walker, the chief minister of Jersey, a United Kingdom Crown dependency off the coast of Normandy, France, denies that there was a cover up after a child’s remains were found.

The allegations of a cover-up stem from statements by Stuart Syvret. Syvret, the former Minister for Health and Social Services for Jersey, said that “It’s a continuum that we see. It’s a culture of cover-up and concealment and tragically the recent evidence is just the latest manifestation of that.”

It has come to light that Edward Paisnel, a notorious pedophile, used to visit the Haut de la Garenne children’s home dressed as Father Christmas. Paisnel in 1971, was given a sentence of 30 years for 13 counts of assault, rape and sodomy.

Syvret says he was dismissed from his ministerial position after highlighting the “torture” of 11 to 16-year-olds in the island’s care homes. He claimed he was “sacked for whistleblowing”.

Police are currently investigating twenty-seven cases of child abuse on the island and recently discovered the body of one child at a care home Haut de la Garenne in St. Martin, and with a potential six sites in the area where more bodies may be located. The home was closed in 1986 and since 2003 it has served as a youth hostel.

Jersey’s deputy police chief, Lenny Harper said “Part of the inquiry will be the fact that a lot of the victims tried to report their assaults but for some reason or another they were not dealt with as they should be.”

Harper added that “no evidence of a cover-up of any Jersey government” has been found. “We are looking at allegations that a number of agencies didn’t deal with things as perhaps they should.”

Syvret has encouraged the government of the United Kingdom to assign independent judges to oversee any cases that result from the investigations.

Builders originally uncovered a body at the care home in 2003 but it was only since an operation investigate child abuse started in 2006 that progress has been made. An ex-minister of the States of Jersey, the parliament of the island, has criticised the handling of the case, stating that abuse cases were mishandled.

Walker told senators that all necessary resources would be use to find the abusers. “None of us imagined that children in Jersey could be abused and mistreated in the way that is being suggested,” the BBC have quoted him as saying. “I express my shock and horror that these things have apparently happened within our island.”

Specialist police from the United Kingdom have been investigating after an enquiry turned up 140 sources verifying the claims of abuse.
