Amazon to buy smart doorbell startup Ring

Friday, March 2, 2018

On Tuesday representatives from US-based online retailer Amazon.com and smart doorbell company Ring announced the startup company will be acquired by Amazon. Ring builds WiFi-connected video doorbells that allow homeowners to view and talk to people at their door from their smartphone. Ring also sells security cameras.

The deal was not officially announced to have happened, although an Amazon spokesperson told about the acquisition to US television channel CNBC (Consumer News and Business Channel).

Analysts suggested the deal could aid the Amazon Key service, which allows Amazon grocery, and other, deliveries to be dropped off inside Amazon Prime members’ homes. Use of Ring WiFi-connected cameras would complement the indoor Cloud Cam Amazon provides to members.

Previously, Ring’s CEO, Jamie Siminoff, remarked the company started when his doorbell wasn’t audible from his shop in his garage. He built a WiFi door bell, he said. Siminoff said sales boosted after his 2013 appearance in a Shark Tank episode where the show panel declined funding the startup. In late 2017, Siminoff appeared on shopping television channel QVC. Ring also settled a lawsuit with competing security company, the ADT Corporation.

Amazon’s Echo smart home speaker product had already been integrated with Ring, by taking voice commands to show the image from a Ring front door camera on an Echo Show device. Amazon had also purchased Blink, a manufacturer of internet-connected security cameras and doorbells, in late 2017.

Why Choosing Urgent Care In Queens Makes Sense

byalex

If you or one of your family members is not feeling very well one day, you have a few alternatives. One is to just wait it out and see what happens. This can be an okay option because many times little problems will resolve themselves with some common-sense treatment and/or over-the-counter medications. Of course, sometimes by the time evening rolls around you actually feel worse or your fever gets higher, or you just start to notice that what you thought was a little problem has suddenly taken a turn for the worse. In that case, you may decide you want to get seen right away but would prefer to be seen by a physician nearby in your community rather than go into the hospital. In this case, urgent care in Queens may be the answer for you. Typically urgent care clinics are located in communities, have extended hours, and also are open on weekends so you can go in apart from regular business hours but still be treated by a general physician rather than an emergency room physician.

Another option when you are not feeling well is to call and try to get an appointment with your regular physician and hopefully get in and get seen. Many times, however, your doctor is not available when you need to be seen. He may have the day or week off because doctors deserve vacations, too. Or perhaps he just does not have any openings in his schedule. Sometimes your doctor’s office may try to squeeze you in, but sometimes there is just not room even for that or you would rather not wait until you can be seen. If that is the case you can probably see another doctor who works with yours, but you may not like that option either. In that case, going to see the urgent care in Queens doctor might be the best option. They will usually just let you come at any time and typically you will have waiting periods much shorter than at a hospital emergency room.

And of course the main reason that going to urgent care in Queens is a good option is much lower cost than going to the emergency room. Not only will you likely have a lower co-pay than if you were go to an emergency room, but the entire visit is going to be less so if you pay a percentage of any costs there, you are definitely saving money by going to urgent care in Queens.

There are many times where going to urgent care in Queens is really the best option for you or your family member. You will typically save money and get faster treatment, if you choose to go to a clinic for urgent care in Queens rather than into the emergency room.

Devon prison rooftop protest ends peacefully

Monday, July 3, 2006

A rooftop protest at a Devon (UK) jail has ended peacefully after almost 28 hours.

The protest, involving 10 inmates, at HMP Channings Wood started after prisoners complained their meals were being prepared by sex offenders.

The category C training prison in Newton Abbot, Devon presently holds 663 inmates, with units dedicated to sex offenders and drug offenders.

A Home Office spokesman said: “The rooftop protest at HMP Channings Wood has ended peacefully with no injuries to prisoners or prison staff.”

The Prison Service has so far refused to confirm the extent of the damage done during the protest, but it is believed to run into thousands of pounds with glass being smashed and paving slabs being torn up.

Earlier on Monday afternoon three prisoners had already given up their protest, leaving ten remaining on the roof. They eventually came down at around 6:30 p.m. BST after speaking with trained negotiators.

The Prison Service has launched an internal enquiry into the protest.

Top 4 Things You Should Know When Looking For Granny Flat Designs

Top 4 Things You Should Know When Looking for Granny Flat Designs

by

Donna Lyon

If you are looking for extra room or space, then granny flats are a very economical and easy to maintain alternative dwelling. There are many different designs on the market, so before you settle on your granny flat, read on to find out the Top 4 Things You Should Know When Looking for Granny Flat Designs for your backyard.

1. Room Sizes

Make sure you are aware of the size of each room in the granny flat. If the design you have chosen is not on display then ask the company to write the sizes of each room on the design. This is extremely important as there is no point building the granny flat to then find out that your bed will not fit in the bedroom or the TV unit won t fit in your lounge area.

There are many drawing programs (such as google sketch) that you can draw the layout and size of the granny flat, along with detailing room sizes. I would recommend you measure your furniture and place this in the rooms also. Alternatively, you can measure the unit in your backyard to get a feel for the size.

2. Plumbing

Plumbing can be expensive so we suggest that having the kitchen, bathrooms and laundry close together is more cost effective then having a granny flat design that has them spaced out. It is important to note that they all need to come to one point in the unit in the end, so therefore the closer they are, the cheaper it will be. When positioning your granny flat in your backyard look for where your sewerage and water pipes are as the unit needs to be plumbed to these, and again the closer they are the more cost effective it will be. If you can t locate your pipes you can always visit dial before you dig on the web or call them and they will send you out the information of where all your pipes should be located. This is a very helpful and necessary service to make sure this process goes smoothly.

3. Light Windows

It used to be that the more light you let in the better and happier you feel. Since all granny flat designs now need a 6 star energy rating, it does make a difference as to how many lights you have, along with the sizes and positioning of the windows. Where you position your granny flat on your block of land also contributes to this. When choosing your design keep in mind where the windows are located, as well as the climate of where you live. Remember if you want a lot of windows they might need to be double glazed.

4. Colours

There are normally so many things that you need to choose colours for, so my best advice is to keep it simple. Blend in with your surroundings, make sure windows, roof and cladding colours all blend. You might want to resell this unit one day and it s easier to sell natural colours then bold colours. Internally keep this natural; walls, carpet and tiles should all blend the same with the kitchen and make sure that this also is going to fit in with your current colour scheme. Lastly, think about the furniture that you might be moving into your unit and make sure this flows through with your chosen colour scheme.

Road accidents, suicide, pregnancy and violence among top killers of world’s youth

Saturday, September 12, 2009

A World Health Organisation study published in The Lancet has revealed the main causes of death for people aged 10–24. It has described the majority of these deaths as preventable and suggested solutions to the problems.

97% of the 2.6 million fatalities annually occur in low- and middle-income countries. The age group comprises 1.8 billion people, 30% of the total population. 15% of female deaths were down to “maternal mortality” which included pregnancy complications, unsafe abortions, and mutilation of genitals. Road traffic accidents accounted for 10% of deaths.

6.3% of the deaths were suicides and 6% were down to violence. Tuberculosis and similar lung infections took 10% of the lives and HIV/AIDS killed 5.5%. Most of the deaths were in sub-Saharan Africa and Southeast Asia. Africa and Southeast Asia were also the only places where male deaths were not above those of females, as much of the maternal mortality occurred there. The data came from 2004.

In developed countries, 32% of the deaths were down to road accidents. “There has long been an assumption that young people are healthy, fit and they don’t die,” explained the report’s lead author, Australian children’s health expert George Patton. He goes on to say “I’ve certainly heard politicians and policy-makers make statements of that kind… Some of these problems, related to emotion, are actually very prominent causes not only of death in adolescence, but health problems later in life.”

The study said safer speed limits, more use of helmets and seatbelts, and better enforcement of drunk driving law could greatly curb the road deaths. Maternal deaths and sexually transmitted disease rates could be cut by sexual education, safe abortion clinics, pregnancy support, HIV testing and treatment, and access to contraceptives.

Violence and suicide could be reduced by education in life skills and an improved role of parents, the study found. It also sought reduction of availability of poisons, firearms, and other dangerous items. In the case of suicide, the study said more work was needed to help young people recover from acts of violence, sexual assault, and child abuse in both the short and long term. Alcohol access reduction was also requested.

The study was conducted by University College London’s Russell Viner, World Health Organization’s Krishna Bose and George Patton of the Royal Children’s Hospital in Melbourne, Australia.

Digestive Enzymes And Pre Digestion, Why Are They The Key To Good Health?

By Paul Blake

This is the second article in a five part series devoted to digestion where we have been following a nutritionally poor meal, typical of America, from the mouth to the esophagus to the stomach. We have seen that the food enters the mouth where enzymes are added via sublingual glands. The meal then moves through the esophagus where it is warmed, and then to the stomach where pre-digestion takes place. We will follow this nutritionally poor meal into the stomach.

Food is chewed in the mouth and saliva is mixed with this food. Saliva is made up of an alkaline electrolyte solution that moistens the food, mucus that serves as a lubricant, amylase, an enzyme that initiates the digestion of starch, lipase, an enzyme that begins the digestion of fat, and protease, which digests protein. Most carbohydrates are broken down by the process of chewing the food and mixing it with enzymes. Hopefully that food had viable enzymes to mix with the enzymes supplied by the mouth.

Pre-digestion in the Stomach

Here is where the food that Americans typically eat leads us directly to disease. By eating mostly refined cooked foods with meat we let our body down. It is like a very good friend of yours is lying in front of you dying of thirst and you hand him a glass of salt water. It is water but it will gradually kill him.

Below I am going to trace the food’s path as it moves into the stomach, and see what happens to it and how it is treated by the stomach and the rest of the digestive system. This is information that few Americans know about. When I received this information my mind was shocked and I immediately changed my style of eating completely and for life. So please read and I pray that this powerful truth changes your life as it did mine. After swallowing the food, it moves down the esophagus, which is 18 to 24 inches long. The esophagus moves through the warm core of the body and is responsible for warming the food to close to body temperature, which is ideally 98.6. This is very important as enzymes digest food best at between 94 and 104 degrees. So, if the ideal situation exists in the esophagus (ice water is not added to the food) the food is warmed to somewhere between 96 and 98 degrees before it enters the stomach.

This food enters the stomach through the cardiac sphincter, which is where the esophagus and the stomach meet. An empty stomach is like a flattened balloon until food enters it. As the food enters the upper part of the stomach, it stretches and enlarges to accommodate the food. In fact, the stomach will enlarge beyond the size of the meal until it is fully inflated. While the stomach is inflating to its full size which takes somewhere between 40 to 60 minutes, pre-digestion takes place. Pre-digestion, is the food sitting in the stomach being digested by the enzymes that came with it. The ideal ph here is about seven, very alkaline. This pre-digestion is considered by many nutritionists to be the most important stage of digestion. This is where the enzymes from our food and mouth digest and prepare the food for absorption.

What are Enzymes?

Before we go any further I would like you to understand why enzymes are so important. The answer to this question is crucial to you understanding your health. Understand this and you understand why the type of food you eat and the way it is handled is so important. Your energy, strength, immune system and all the systems of your body right down to each individual cell depend completely on enzymes. Without enzymes nothing happens in your body, or if it does it could take years to take place; essentially you are dead.

The enzymes we use are both produced by cells in our body and also brought in with food made by other living cells. These enzymes are proteins produced in living cells that affect chemical reactions. An example of this is a banana sitting in a bowl. After a few days, you notice the skin turning brown. That is the enzymes in the banana acting as a catalyst and causing a chemical reaction which releases energy.

Without these reactions caused by the enzymes the food you eat will not be turned into energy or supplies for the body. Here are just some of the other functions of enzymes in the body. All our vitamins, trace elements and minerals are dissolved down to molecular level by enzymes. Only at that level can they and our food be absorbed by our body. They also control digestion, cell growth, and wound healing plus the phagocytes of the immune system use enzymes to cope with pathogens.

Once the stomach completes the pre-digestive process, the food then undergoes chemical and mechanical digestion. Here in the lower part of the stomach, peristaltic contractions (mechanical digestion) churn the bolus, which mixes with strong digestive juices. These juices include powerful hydrochloric acid, which helps break down the bolus into a liquid called chyme. In addition, enzymes called pepsin and cathepsin are added to the juice in the stomach to break down most of the protein in the food. This process can take several hours depending on the meal eaten. The ideal ph here is about three, very acidic.

The hydrochloric acid has three purposes. The first is to break down mineral bonds from our diet. Now when they pass through our intestines they are small enough to pass through the wall to be used by the body. Second, to clean the food of pathogens by creating an acidic environment that destroys the pathogens. Third, change pepsinogen into pepsin, which breaks down the long protein strings that are the essential and non-essential amino acids in the food. These are broken down by pepsin into polypeptides, peptides and tri-peptides so they can be utilized by our body.

Once the food is broken down, it has the consistency of cake batter. This is called chyme and is released into the duodenum by the pyloric sphincter. If this chyme is properly prepared at the stomach your health is good and you never get sick. If the chyme is not properly prepared disease will soon follow and the person will find all their genetic weaknesses. This is why digestive enzymes and pre-digestion are such important keys to good health.

Glasgow cannabis enthusiasts celebrate ‘green’ on city green

Tuesday, April 22, 2014

Coinciding with Easter Sunday, Glasgow Cannabis Social Club’s annual 420 event was held on Glasgow Green, under sunny blue skies, and overlooking the river Clyde. Despite the city’s council attempting to revoke permission for the gathering at the last minute, police were happy for it to go-ahead with approximately a dozen officers attending in high-visibility vests.

The Daily Record reported five arrests were made for minor offences, likely smoking and possession of small quantities of cannabis. Taking a less-sensational — and more accurate — line of reporting, the Monday edition of Glasgow’s Evening News stated five were referred to the Procurator Fiscal who is responsible for deciding if charges should be brought.

Official figures provided by the police were that 150 attended. With people coming and going, Wikinews reporters estimated upwards of 200 attended, compared to nearly 700 who had signed up for the event on Facebook. Hemp goods were advertised and on sale at the event, and some attendees were seen drinking cannabis-themed energy drinks.

“I was searched and charged under the Misuse of Drugs Act (which is a lot of bollocks)” one attendee noted online, adding “not fair to happen on a brilliant day like it was, other than that I had a great day!” A second said they were openly smoking and ignored by police, who “were only really focusing on people who looked particularly young”.

Cannabis seeds were openly and legally sold at the event and a hydroponics supplier brought a motortrike towing an advertising trailer. Actually growing cannabis is, however, illegal in the UK.

With the event openly advocating the legalisation of cannabis, speakers put their arguments for this to a receptive crowd. Retired police officer James Duffy, of Law Enforcement Against Prohibition, spoke of the failed United States alcohol prohibition policy; stressing such policies needlessly bring people into contact with criminal elements. Highlighting other countries where legalisation has been implemented, he pointed out such led to lower crime, and lower drug use overall.

One speaker, who produced a bottle of cannabis oil he had received through the post, asserted this cured his prostate cancer. Others highlighted the current use of Sativex by the National Health Service, with a cost in-excess of £150 for a single bottle of GW Pharmaceuticals patented spray — as-compared to the oil shown to the crowd, with a manufacturing cost of approximately £10.

Similar ‘420’ pro-cannabis events were held globally.

Ozzy Osbourne’s personal possessions fetch $800,000 for charity

Sunday, December 2, 2007

American heavy metal performer Ozzy Osbourne, who became famous as the lead vocalist for Black Sabbath and later as a solo act, has raised more than US$800,000 for The Sharon Osbourne Colon Cancer Program, founded by his spouse Sharon Osbourne at the Cedars Sinai Hospital, by auctioning off personal items.

A number of the items that he auctioned off over the two day period have been seen on his reality TV show The Osbournes, which featured home life with Sharon, Ozzy and their two children. Amongst some of the higher-priced items were a carved walnut Victorian-style custom built pool table which raised $11,250, a painting from Edourad Drouot which fetched $10,500, a pair of Ozzy’s famous round glasses which raised $5,250 and a dog bed given to Sharon by Elton John which sold for $2,375.

Some more famous items were also amongst the 500 lots offered. Ozzy’s black satin coat, complete with bat-wing cape, raised $3,300 and a hand-painted floral cup used regularly on The Osbournes made $1,625. A bronze plaque of a demon’s head that was regularly seen in its position adorning the front door of their house had been expected to go for $800 to $1,200instead raised $8,750. A wire model of the Eiffel Tower from on the kitchen table sold for $10,000, while skull-covered trainers Ozzy had worn reached $2,625. Bidders came from as far away as Germany to buy what they could from his mansion in Beverly Hills, California.

However, three cars included in the auction failed to attract bidders and did not sell. They were a 2006 Bentley Continental Flying Spur, estimated at $160,000 to $180,000, a 2005 Cadillac CTS-V sedan estimated at $30,000 to $40,000 and a 1950 Oldsmobile Futuramic 88 Club Coupe previously owned by author Danielle Steel estimated at $40,000 to $50,000. Sharon had earlier said of the cars “We’re not great car people. They really don’t do a lot for us.

Darren Julien, president of Julien’s Auctions, which organised the two-day sale, said “It did very well. It raised some good money for a very worthy cause.”

“For a celebrity garage sale, it was pretty spectacular.,” he went on. He also commented on the fact that there was fierce competition for the many artworks included. “We had Ozzy fans bidding against these sophisticated fine art buyers, which you don’t see every day. For the most part the metalheads were outbidding the art crowd.”

Check How Life Insurance Proves To Be A Life Protector For Non Doms?}

Check how life insurance proves to be a life protector for non-doms?

by

Brijesh B.Experts suggest that if you have a life insurance then there is no need to worry about the non-dom legislation issued in the month of October. As famously quoted by Lord Jenkins, Inheritance tax is a voluntary tax, paid by those who distrust their heirs more than they dislike the Inland Revenue’. This statement was quite true until the recent announcement of non-dom legislation which enforces inheritance tax (IHT) on everybody, whether they are UK residents or not.

It is a well known fact that UK nationals have to pay 40% IHT on their world wide estates in the event of death. The law offers inter-spousal exemptions and the condition that the first 325,000 of one’s estate is normally exempted from the IHT. The government has frozen these rules until 2021, which means that a big chunk of the estates will be impacted by IHT in the event of the owner’s death.

Now, to resolve this issue, one of the best methods is to consider a Potentially Exempt Transfer (PET). If you do not know what is PET then let us clarify that it is the method of transferring your property as a gift to your family member. As gifts do not fall under the realm of IHT, you can transfer your estate to your loved ones and they do not need to pay the IHT. Hold on! Isn’t there a clause associated with this kind of estate transfer? Well, the government has reserved the number of years for which IHT would not be imposed on PET. According to law, IHT would not be incurred on PET for a period of seven years.

Now, in case, the donor dies within a span of seven years since offering PET, a portion of or the entire gift (property) will become chargeable to IHT. History suggests that UK families would write in trust to save the beneficiaries from IHT however, as per the amendments made in 2006, writing in trust is subjected to 20% taxes. This is quite an unpleasant scenario for the non-doms as the government has reduced the time period within which one becomes domicile to 15 out of 20 years. This makes the non-doms liable for IHT in case they have worldwide estates.

One of the striking news related to owners of UK residential property is that after April 2017, any kind of shares in offshore companies with a link to the UK residential property would not be considered as an excluded property for IHT. In addition, those who are living in UK properties owned by the offshore trusts would be subjected to IHT charges in the event of their death. According to the latest reports, an estimated worth of 200 billion of UK residential property would fall into the realm of the latest IHT laws by April 2017.

If you are a non-dom and fall into this category then there is no need to panic as a simple life insurance plan would serve as a solution for keeping away the IHT. Whether you have a single or joint life insurance policy, the claim proceeds of the policy would not be considered as part of one’s worldwide estate in the event of the death of the policy holder. To deal with this issue immaculately, you must take expert advice especially when dealing with a high value life insurance policy. Authentic advice should be taken whether you are a UK resident or fall into the category of non-doms. This would help you in a big way to get cheaper life insurance premiums if you have absolute knowledge about underwritings and reinsurance treaties.
